Number of Children who Entered Out of Home Care, with Parental Alcohol or Drug Abuse as a Circumstance Reported at Removal, by Age in the United States 2025

Children from birth to age 5 made up more than half (58.8%, N=35,709) of the children placed in out-of-home care with parental alcohol or drug abuse as a circumstance reported at removal during Fiscal Year 2025.
Children age 6 - 12 made up 29.1% (N=17,648) and children age 13 - 18+ made up 12.1% (N=7,375) of the children removed from their homes and placed in out-of-home care during the same time period.

If you suspect a child has been harmed by abuse or neglect, please call 1-800-422-4453.

If you suspect that a child has been harmed or is at risk of being harmed by abuse or neglect, call the National Child Abuse Hotline at Call the National Child Abuse Hotline at 1-800-422-4453. Serving the United States and Canada, the hotline is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with professional crisis counselors who—through interpreters—provide assistance in over 170 languages.
